Demonisation of Kahmir

Kashmir Magazine

Media in Delhi particularly national news channels demonizing situation in Kashmir was the regret of Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah during the years when National Conference and PDP were in power but now even the Governor Satya Pal Malik regrets the demonization of Kashmir situation by media in Delhi particularly national news channels. In one of the interactions with India TV in Delhi former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti told Anchor Rajat Sharma that national news channels are glorifying even a minor violent incident by debating the issue for days together and this is what Governor Satya Pal Malik said during his press conference at SKICC in Srinagar. Whether it is governor’s administration or a popular government in Jammu & Kashmir, the issue has to be taken with the central government which if interested in portraying the Kashmir situation in the right perspective before the people in rest of the country can convey its displeasure to the national news channels for blowing even minor violent incidents out of proportions. Glorifying even the minor violent incident hits badly the tourism in Kashmir and consequently shatters the economy of the state. While the fact remains that more army men and paramilitary personnel are killed in encounters with the naxalites in north eastern states than with militants in Jammu & Kashmir, the killings in naxalite hit states are hardly mentioned once or twice in news bulletin but the killings in Kashmir are debated and blown out of proportions for days together. Though the killings in naxalite hit states deserve as much concern as is being raised on killings in Kashmir but demonisng Kashmir situation over even minor violent incidents has become a routine affair for the national news channels. The TV anchors debating Kashmir incidents though face the heat from the panelists they invite for hour long discussions but they enjoy encounters with the critics in the news rooms without bothering to move out from Delhi to Kashmir for taking the visuals of normal life in Kashmir. Instead of sharing his concerns over the demonizing of situation in Kashmir better it would have been for the governor Satya Pal Malik to share his concerns on vicious propaganda of national TV channels with Prime Minister, the Home Minter and the Information and Broadcasting Minister in Delhi.
