Amarnath Yatra; Yet another big challenge for Mehbooba

Kashmir Magazine

The peaceful conduct of Amarnath Yatra this year is yet another big challenge for Mehbooba Mufti led PDP-BJP coalition government as the BJP government at the centre is dropping sufficient enough signals about its seriousness on the security of Amarnath Yatris keeping in view the recent attacks on Police, Para militaries and army. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has chosen to personally review the security arrangements for the Yatra in Srinagar as the attacks on government forces continue despite announcement of the suspension of operations against militants for the holy month of Ramadhan. The Home Minister’s announcement that cases against (Stone Pelters) will be withdrawn is also an indication of the central governments tendencies of showing patience against the offensives of both the militants and the stone throwing angry crowds in Kashmir valley. Showing patience for the conduct of peaceful Amarnath Yatra is a drastic shift in the policy of the central government in dealing with the nonstop unrest in Kashmir which has so far taken away more than hundred and twenty lives. More confidence building measures if announced on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr will create a congenial atmosphere for the peaceful conduct of Amarnath Yatra. The central government may have apprehensions about the peaceful conduct of Amarnath Yatra but more concerned than the governments in Delhi and Srinagar about the peaceful conduct of Yatra are the people of Kashmir who are known for rendering unmatched hospitality year after year to the Yatris visiting holi Amarnath cave. Despite unrests in 2008, 2010 and 2016 Kashmiris have extended their cooperation to the government in the peaceful conduct of Yatra. More confidence building measures if initiated by Government of India before the commencement of Amarnath Yatra will further the causes of a peaceful Amarnath Yatra this year.
